National Lutheran Schools Week

What a wonderful week!  We had a snow day & we had 4 days to dress wacky!  It's a lot of fun, but it will be nice to get back to "normal" next week!

Social Studies Fair … Since we had a snow day on Monday, we will be finishing up our rough draft reports on Monday & taking them home on Wednesday.  We will then have the final drafts due on Tuesday, February 12th.  All other dates right now will stay the sameJ!

Singing at Church … Youth-4-Truth (1st & 2nd Grade Choir) will be singing at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church (@ Telegraph & Lone Pine) on Sunday, February 10th at the 10:30 service.  Thank you, in advance to all of the parents who can commit to attending!

Homework Reminder … This week I noticed that there were assignment turned in that did not have student handwriting on them.  While I know that there are times when students need help completing assignments, it is important for them to write their own work.  Students who turn in work with writing other than their own will be asked to do it over again.  This is an important lesson it taking responsibility for their work and I appreciate your support in this situation!

Tardy Reminders … Just a reminder that students will be marked tardy for class if they are not or have not been in the room before the bell rings at 8:10.  If they are in the hallway, but have not come into the room yet, they will still be marked tardy.

Bible References …  When saying Memory Work, references are just as important as the verse itself (i.e. Romans 6:23).  Students are expected to know those as well.

Mr. Gerds’ Reception … Please join us this weekend on Sunday at the 11:00 service as we celebrate Mr. Gerds’ 50th Anniversary in the Teaching Ministry.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to show him how much we appreciate his commitment!

Memory Work due Thursday, February 7 , 2013:
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

The Sixth Commandment You shall not commit adultery.  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other.

I realize that some of you may question the appropriateness of the word "sexually" in the meaning for the 6th commandment.  In my years of experience, it is best to answer their questions – if they have them, in the simplest way possible.  When students have asked me in the past I have used phrases like, "It means that Moms and Dads have a different kind of love for each other then they have for you and they promise to love only each other in that way."  or "We show our love toward each other the way God has taught us." or “God has determined us as male and female and brings husband and wife together as a couple and to create a family.”  Again, you don't need to go into any detail. Simply answer the question and move on to the rest of the meaning.  In my experience, most children are happy with that answer and they don't question it again.  It's important for us to not be hesitant to use this word.  This is not a bad or inappropriate word -- it can be the worldly definition or explanation that can lead to inappropriateness.  A simple explanation is all that is needed.
